The good news is that you arereading the article in a class that will help you grapple with it. Your teacher and your fellow students are working on it with you in acollaborative environment. For the exercise to be most fruitful,though, students must do their best to understand the article as muchas possible, so when they convene in class, they can contribute tothe discussion. To help you get the most out of a scholarlyarticle, Dr. Becky Rosenberg, former Directorof the UWBTeaching and Learning Center andformer Director of the UWBWriting Center, haswritten the following guide to approaching a scholarly text. Use thisguide each time you read an academic text until it becomes secondnature. One of the keys to finding your way throughthe specialized and often dense texts produced by scholars isremembering that somewhere early in the text the writer needs to tellthe reader how his or her study contributes something original to thescholarship on the subject. It may be a correction of some pastmisunderstanding; it may be the inclusion of some consideration orvariable that previous researchers have missed; it may be applying atheory or concept in a new way or in a place it has not previouslybeen used. Make it your first goal to find that claim. Once you knowthat claim, you will be better able to understand the author'schoices, and better able to evaluate the effectiveness of theargument.

On this course passed five small black alluvial plains, covered with grass, three of them having springs with water on the surface.
